Xanadu: Glitz, Glam and Glory Days
Many people interested in buying or renting a condo in the Bahamas ask us about the Suffolk Court location, so we thought the following note may whet your appetite.
Suffolk Court rubs shoulders with the legendary Xanadu holiday resort. Xanadu Hotel was made famous by superstar aviator and thrill-seeker, Howard Hughes, who bought it in its early days and owned it until his death there in 1976. It has since been shrouded in fascinating tales of hedonism, glamour and high society.
It was once the most popular Bahaman hideaway for major Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant, Dean Martin and Lucille Ball, all of whom spent time relaxing on its beaches, sailing its glistening waters and, of course, partying all night. Since then, its image has mellowed. Today, although it is still popularly considered one of The Bahamas’s most happening beaches, it is also a place where holiday goers enjoy quality R&R.
Visitors largely agree that Xanadu’s tropical seascape brings on a feeling that isn’t experienced everyday: bliss. The resort has 20 beachfront acres, an 80 slip marina and is, as you can imagine, designed for those who live life to its fullest. Boats leaving its marinas offer fishing, snorkelling, sightseeing and other trips.
Why is it called Xanadu?
Xanadu is a reference to the poem: A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In the poem, Xanadu is the name of the Chinese province where the poem’s central character, Kubla Khan, establishes his pleasure garden. Coleridge describes the decadence of Xanadu in the poem’s first stanza:
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree :
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
With a name inspired by a vision of such beauty, it is hardly surprising that the resort attracts the world’s most discerning holiday goers and investors. Buyers searching for property in the Bahamas tend to purchase in or around this location. It is largely for this reason that our Bahamas Condos are widely coveted, where Suffolk Court offers a rare opportunity in an exquisite location.
