Grand Bahama Island Sailing Regatta “Champion of the Seas”
Grand Bahama Island Sailing Regatta
The Annual Grand Bahama Sailing regatta is happening this June. The event kicks off from Taino Beach, where fleets of sloops line up to vie for the title of ‘Champion of The Sea.’ The regatta has been going strong for years, and attracts a mixture of professional and competitive sailors, as well as fledgling sailors wanting to cut their teeth. The event, though essentially competitive, is also open to curious sailors who want to join in for fun, or who just want to soak up the atmosphere the regatta generates. For visitors who simply want to take it in, there’s lots of entertainment of offer, with music, food and other Bahaman feel good celebrations happening in Taino. Taino is widely considered one of the most stunning beaches on Grand Bahama Island.
The waters of Grand Bahama make an idyllic setting for this great sporting event, with glistening aquamarine beaches scattered along its shoreline. Sailors wishing to travel by boats can arrive to the island via the three official ports of entry, namely: Freeport, Lucaya and West End. Customs and immigration will assess boats for entry upon arrival. In total, there are seven marinas on the island, most of them fully equipped with electricity hubs, waste-disposal units and fuel stations, which sailors can make use of.
The regatta will be held over three days, and has three main sloop classifications: “A” – 28 feet and up, “B” – Up to 20 feet and “C” – 12 to 14 feet.
A cash prize is awarded to the winner, as well as the ego-boosting title ‘Champion of the Seas.’ It’s a great event, and one that gathers the community in a spirit of fun and sportsmanship.
